I like it when they’re sick.
When the demands of the day come to a sudden, screeching halt.
I like it when they’re sick.
When their small bodies lean into mine, heavy and feather light at once.
I like it when they’re sick.
When it’s completely acceptable, expected even, to stay in our pajamas all day.
I like it when they’re sick.
When they need me for the smallest of tasks that on any other day I would tell them they are quite capable of doing themselves.
I like it when they’re sick.
When I don’t feel guilty for keeping the TV on far too long.
I like it when they’re sick.
When our world shrinks to the size of a kitchen and living room and they’re never out of eyesight or earshot.
I like it when they’re sick.
When the most important thing I do all day is cuddle.
I like it when they’re sick.
When my mommy intuition is at an all-time high and I can tell how they’re feeling from the look of their eyes and the feel of my lips on their foreheads.
I like it when they’re sick.
When the sudden disruption to our schedule reminds me that all those things that I thought were so important don’t hold a candle to the tiny figure curled up on the couch.
I like it when they’re sick.
When I joyfully say ‘Yes’ to every request with no worry of spoiling them.
I like it when they’re sick.
When for just a day or two I can pretend that they’re still my little babies.
No, I don’t like it that they’re sick.
But I like it when they’re sick.

I do like sick, but not throwing up. Still, 6 plus years in as a mom and that is the one thing I just can’t deal with it to be honest. But the cuddling when they don’t feel well is still a loved feeling here, as well.

Totally agree! When I hear about other people being sick I start freaking out that we’ll get it too.
Tove Stakkestad says
I loved this… and I have to agree… I love the cuddles and the totally appropriate all-day movie marathon! But I do hope you and your family stay healthy! 🙂
Lauren says
Thanks! We’ve had a few little things, but nothing too serious. Just enough to enjoy all the things I wrote about 🙂

I hear ya. All the cuddles and sweetness when they aren’t feeling well are amazing. It sucks they are sick, but lovely at the same time!
Lauren says
Exactly!
Susanne/The Dusty Parachute says
I *used* to like it but I think my daughter liked it too much too and started making a little habit of it which just involved on me catering to her popsicle and frozen waffle requests all day. 🙂
Lauren says
Hah! They’re smart, aren’t they?? Sometimes too smart!
Echo says
I completely agree. I don’t like THAT they’re sick, but I like WHEN they are sick.
Lauren says
Yes, it’s nice to have those times to slow down and baby them.
Carrie says
Honestly, I think I am at my best as a mother when they’re sick! Although after day 3 or so, I’m ready for everyone to be well again.
Lauren says
I agree; three days is a good length!
Tricia the Good Mama says
Yes, I like it when they are just a little sick. I love snuggling on the couch, watching movies and doing nothing all day long. It helps if it’s completely miserable outside too!
Lauren says
There’s certainly been enough of those days this winter!!
Mardesia @ Keeping Your Cents says
Thanks for a new way to look at my kiddos being sick.
Lauren says
You’re welcome 🙂 Hopefully the illnesses don’t last long, but those little chances to baby them are always nice.

I have always thought these exact thoughts! Especially when my youngest is home, however when they become teenagers they sleep in their room all day when they are sick. I want to watch movies and dote on them. 🙁 Mommying is hard sometimes.
Lauren says
It sure is! I might have to make mine sleep on the couch when they get older 😉
Jenny @ Unremarkable Files says
I try not to enjoy it when my toddlers/preschoolers don’t feel well, but inside I sorta kinda do because it’s the only time they will sit still enough to cuddle.
Lauren says
Exactly!

I totally agree! We get so busy, it is nice to have a down day or two where we are the center of their world again 🙂
